The origin of our association arises from VGCA, a cultural association located in Vicq-sur-Gartempe.
VGCA has, amongst its aims, the development and knowledge of local heritage. VGCA looked for musicians to play in the village church.
A string quartet, Quatuor Ebène, made up of young musicians, agreed to come to Vicq in 2003. The talent of these young people was a hit with the public, so the quartet returned, year after year, to the delight of organisers and audiences alike.
It was at the suggestion of the quartet that a 3 day summer festival should be created and so “Les Chaises Musicales” came about.
A group of members of VGCA, all passionate music lovers, launched into the adventure, and 2007 saw the birth of “Au Fil Des Ondes”.
The classical concerts of the festival “Les Chaises Musicales” usually take place in our churches whose architectural quality and fine acoustics are greatly valued by professional musicians.
The many spectators who come are happily surprised by the esthetics of our churches and villages. This important event, in terms of numerous visitors, ensures the support of local authorities.
The region’s commercial enterprises – shops, hotels, gites and campsites welcome the custom of spectators and musicians. Indeed, some spectators and their families lengthen their stay in our area in order to enjoy its rural delights. Many visitors stay for 3 days and are consistently amazed at the beauty and cultural heritage of our area.
One of the highlights of the festival is a picnic on the lawn of the presbytery in Vicq. A classical concert in the church is followed by a concert of world music enjoyed under the stars. T
o organise this event, we call on the support of local producers who supply farmhouse cheeses, apple juice, and bread. Other supplies are sourced from the local small stores. Waste is managed carefully and it’s a point of honour to leave the site in as good a condition as we found it.
The excellence of Quatuor Ebène is indisputable and audiences can enjoy a high quality musical experience at affordable prices.
Quatuor Ebène have won many awards, among them Victoires de la Musique in 2010 and a BBC Award 2014.
