Since 2003, Quatuor Ebène has given a summer concert in the church of Vicq-sur-Gartempe, with a programme of classical music, world music and jazz. In response to the increasing success of these concerts, Quatuor Ebène went on to create, in this rural area, a festival, “Les Chaises Musicales” to take place each August. It became imperative to develop a structure to support the initiative, and so, the association “Au Fil Des Ondes” was created.
In 2008, the association organised the first edition of “Les Chaises Musicales” under the artistic direction of Quatuor Ebène and clarinettist Michel Portal, held in the churches of Angles-sur-L’Anglin, Saint Sauveur and Vicq-sur-Gartempe. 550 enthusiastic supporters attended this first edition.
The second edition followed in August 2009 with the appearance of guest artists Michel Portal, the Yaron Herman Trio and Group Contraste. This time numbers topped 850 drawn mainly from the Vienne department and surrounds but with some spectators coming from other areas of France and from other countries.
A thousand spectators were attracted to the third edition of the festival in 2010. Quatuor Ebène and Jean-Francois Zygel along with their guests, Akiko Yamamoto (piano), Ivan Solano (clarinet), Olavo Viana (voice and guitar), Richard Hery (percussion) and the Eric Chapelle Quartet, delighted their growing audiences.
The 2011 edition of the festival was dedicated to the vocal arts and we welcomed the celebrated singers, Natalie Dessay and Karine Deshayes.
In 2012, the festival explored the musical roots of the Mediterranean, Russia and the Balkans. This year’s musical guests played Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Franck. We also welcomed back Michel Portal.
August 2013 saw a move to the baroque with the appearance of “Surprise”, Hasnaa Bennani and flautist Alexis Kossenko. Violinist Chris Stout and Catriona Mckay on the Celtic harp, introduced audiences to a programme of world music. As always, audiences had the opportunity to meet, and chat to the musicians after each concert.
